Čertovy skály (Devil's Rocks)

A bizarre sandstone wall in neighbouring Lidečko, wrapped in a devilish legend. A short walk from the apartment — with climbing routes for the adventurous.

Legend has it the devil made a bet that he could dam the Senice valley before the first rooster crowed. He lost — and all that remains of his night's work is a mighty sandstone wall above Lidečko, today a protected natural monument.

The rock wall is a favourite target for short walks and a practice crag for climbers. It stands right by the road between Horní Lideč and Lidečko, so it's an easy trip on foot, by bike, or even with a pushchair.

The nicest way there from the apartment is on foot — head out of the centre of Horní Lideč along the Senice valley and you're standing under the wall in under half an hour. The path is flat and mostly away from the main road, so small children and even a pushchair will manage. If you'd rather not walk, there is parking near the rocks in Lidečko.

The wall photographs best in the late afternoon, when low sun rakes across the sandstone and picks out its layers. Spring and autumn are the quietest; in summer, families and climbers arrive through the afternoon. You can drop by whenever — the rocks are freely accessible all year and there is no entrance fee.

It pairs well with a stroll around Lidečko or a longer hike towards the ridges. And if the weather turns, you're still only half an hour from a warm apartment.
